I have read dozens of zombie apocalypse fiction, and one of my favorites of all time was Day by Day Armageddon, by J.L.L Bourne. Written by an author that can actually write, he definitely gets the military aspects right, and does a good job of providing a realistic plot. All three books are very entertaining. I highly recommend these zombie books if you are into the apocalypse fiction genre and are tired of reading the poor quality books that have flooded the market.
The Best Zombie Apocalypse Fiction Trilogy
Day by Day Armageddon
An Air Force Officer documents the origins of the Zombie Apocalypse in his journal entries.
He writes about how the collapse started, how he escaped the initial madness, and how he moved into the country side in search of a place to ride it out.
This book is probably one of the first zombie novels to make the genre really main stream. Mainly, because it was written well and had a professional editing job—something that has been lacking with some in the apocalypse novel genre.
It also is pretty realistic in the limitations of man in a zombie apocalypse situation—the Special Forces Delta Force Navy Seal characters in apocalypse novels is too played out.

Bonus Apocalypse Book by J.L. Bourne:
Tomorrow War: The Chronicles of Max
After reading the Day by Day series, I was happy to see that JL Bourne decided to write a non-zombie post apocalyptic novel.
When a mega computer virus is unleashed in an attempt to shut down a research program of a terrorist country, it inadvertently rolls into the world at large and starts the collapse of financial institutions in every developed country.
Then the grid goes down. The economy collapses.
A CIA trained agent predicts the fall based on information he has about the operation and is able to start prepping.
He goes to the country and builds a small underground bunker to ride things out. But soon he must go out into the countryside and towns in order to see what is going on.
What has developed, he cannot stand for, and must choose whether to survive alone, or to band with others to fight to restore the American ideals and ways.
