TEOTWAWKI: The End Of The World As We Know It
Meaning: A catastrophic event that destroys the existing institutions and norms of society.
When it comes to books written about the collapse of American society, there are some real gems amongst the fodder. Less popular than the EMP fiction and Post-Apocalypse Zombie novels, the Societal Collapse novels are more realistic in nature and usually center around financial collapse, political civil unrest and massive domestic terrorism. Because these things have actually happened—to a certain degree—in America already, these novels really represent the most realistic scenarios for The End Of The World As We Know It situations.
Here is the short-list for the best and most realistic TEOTWAWKI novels written in recent years. If we left a great one out that you have read, let us know in the comments below.
Stand Your Ground
This is an excellent book that has a very realistic plot of an end of the world scenario. A germ attack has devastated the East Coast of the United States and the president has gone down in Air Force One.
When the basic infrastructure of the US is gone, a band of survivors must learn the realities of this new world. Or die trying. The learning curve is very steep.
As they survive, they get involved with a plot to wipe out the legitimate leadership of the US government, and must confront the very forces that once swore to uphold the constitution.
What I liked: strong character development and good understanding of the political climate in the US. Totally plausible plot that makes for a believable and entertaining story.
The characters were also like normal people—none were super trained Special Forces types, which gets old and is over-used in books like this. The normal people in this book make it even more believable as an EOTWAWKI novel.
This is part of a series, so the books aren’t too long, but this is reflected in the cheap price. I will definitely read the first few books in this series to see how the plot plays-out and see if the author can maintain a high-level of writing.
If you liked other books like “As We Fall” or the “Home Coming” series, then this is worth checking out.
