There are certain books that all people should read by the time they reach adulthood. Not only because these books represent a certain aspect in understanding important aspects of the political and human condition, but because these books are well-intertwined in our popular culture. A day does not go by that you will not hear a reference to one of these books on the news, in a movie or in conversation with friends. So here is the one book that all adults should read.
1984
I am always surprised at just how many function American adults are out there that have never read 1984 by George Orwell.
If you have ever heard the term “Big Brother” then this is where it came from.
This novel is probably one of the most influential and foretelling books ever written on politics, society and the dangers of rote-obedience. It is always being referenced from movies to Jeopardy episodes and political commentary.
And the theme of the book has never been more germane than it is now, in 2018.
If you have yet to read this novel, then you are missing out on a very well thought out novel that was published in 1949 but reads like it was written nowadays.
This is hands-down the best dystopian science fiction thriller ever written.
So please, don’t be in that ignorant class of people that has not read this book because they skipped the assignment in High School. And if you are of the generation that was unfortunate enough to go through a school system that no longer requires reading this great book, then pick up a copy and do your homework. It is long over due.
There just is no excuse for not reading 1984 as an adult, so that is why it is the number one most important book that every adult should read. Or read again!
